New WhatsApp's feature will warn you about 'dangerous' links

WhatsApp is rolling out another new feature to counter the fake new menace on its platform. The company is reportedly testing a new feature called 'Suspicious Link Detection'.

According to a report on wabetainfo.com website that tracks upcoming changes on WhatsApp, the instant-messaging app is working on a feature that allows users to detect if a received link is marked as suspicious.

As the name suggests, the feature will warn users if the link received has some suspicious content. The suspicious link feature will detect any dangerous or spam link received in a message and then warn users before they click on it.

The feature is so far being rolled out to Android Beta testers. WhatsApp Beta version 2.18.221 is coming with the new feature and it is made available for all the beta testers.

As per the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, users can clearly see a message with a suspicious link marked with a Red strip which reads, ‘Suspicious Link’. Despite the warning in case the user clicks on the link then a message will pop up on the screen reading, “Suspicious Link. This link contains unusual characters. It may be trying to appear as another site.”

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp analyzes the link present in a message and sees if it redirects the user to a fake or alternative website. The instant messaging app analyzes the received link locally without sending the data to its servers. The company is still making some tweaks to the feature and it will be soon made available to all the WhatsApp users. It is also expected that the company might add the ability to manually report a suspicious link to WhatsApp just link you can do on Facebook.

Last week, WhatsApp rolled out a new forwarded message feature which will make it easier for users to spot a forwarded message. The messages that are forwards will now come with an indicator making it clear for the reader that the message has been forwarded.
